One of the most common types of food poisoning is salmonella. Side affects of salmonella food poisoning include vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, nausea and in some cases, death. Recently, someone died from salmonella poisoning while 76 others were ill due to salmonella poisoning – all 77 cases were from the same strain of disease. According to Channel 12, WRDW TV, federal food safety officials are working to identify the source of this salmonella outbreak. Currently, it appears to be linked to ground turkey.
This particular salmonella outbreak dates back to March and has affected people from 26 different states. No recalls have been issued yet because the cases have not been linked to a particular product, establishment or brand. According to the CDC, cultures of ground turkey from four different locations have shown to be contaminated with salmonella and three of those four linked to the same production site. These samples have not been connected to this specific salmonella outbreak.
Bill Marler, a food safety advocate said, “Consumers have no idea what to do except not eat ground turkey.” The highest numbers of people sickened from this salmonella outbreak are located in Michigan and Ohio. Both states have ten people each who have suffered from salmonella poisoning. There have been nine illnesses reported in Texas, seven reported in Illinois, six reported in California, and five reported in Pennsylvania.
There has also been a recent salmonella outbreak caused by bad papayas where eight people in Georgia have suffered salmonella poisoning. One of those people is being hospitalized as a result of the salmonella illness. FDA issued a recall last Saturday, July 23, for papayas from Agromod, a Texas based company. There have been reported links of salmonella to papayas in 23 states including California, Massachusetts, Louisiana, Minnesota, and Georgia.
