Mexican Antimicrobial Products Not Yet Safe

According to the FDA, several companies are marketing products that look like antimicrobial products available in Mexico.  Because of this, consumers purchasing and using these products may believe they will receive the beneficial health effects of an antimicrobial drug.   However, the FDA warns that the products are not FDA approved to treat, cure or prevent any medical conditions.  The products may or may not contain antimicrobials.  The use of the products could delay treatment for serious illnesses.

The FDA is warning consumers not to use these products that are marketed as dietary supplements that also claim to be antimicrobial drugs.  Antimicrobial is antibiotic, antiviral, or antifungal and kills or inhibits the growth of pathogens.

There are about four cases in Texas where children received emergency care due to the worsening of their illnesses.  This occurred after the children’s parents gave them products that may have contained antimicrobials.  The products given to them were packaged to resemble antimicrobial drugs that are readily available in Mexico.  According to the FDA, giving the product to the children delayed legitimate medical treatment.

These products have been distributed in Florida, Colorado, Delaware, California, Texas, and Georgia.
