Invokana was designed to help manage Type 2 diabetes. The drug causes the patient’s kidneys to expel sugar through the urine, bringing down the overall blood sugar level. Unfortunately, a 2015 report by the Food and Drug Administration contained evidence that Invokana may induce a serious condition called ketoacidosis in patients. There have also been links between Invokana and acute kidney failure.
Ketoacidosis is the overabundance of acidic ketones in your body. Excessive ketones make blood more acidic and can cause diabetic coma or even death. Complications from Invokana resulting in these symptoms have been reported by the hundreds, many by people who were entirely unaware of the potential risks associated with the drug.
These risks should have been communicated by the manufacturer, whose duty it is to ensure the safety of their products and sufficiently warn them of all potential hazards. If you or a loved one has been harmed by Invokana, you may have suffered the consequences of them failing to do so, and you should speak with an attorney experienced in handling pharmaceutical drug cases.

Evidence of Harm
The FDA report on Invokana and other drugs in its class provided evidence of at least 20 cases of the drugs linked to ketoacidosis, with each case requiring the patient to receive emergency room treatment or hospitalization.
Additionally, between March 2013 and March 2014 alone, the FDA received 457 reports of ketoacidosis, higher than 92% of other drugs monitored, according to a government report. These alarming numbers suggest that Invokana is dangerous to diabetic patients. Any diabetic patients taking Invokana should seek medical attention and consult an attorney immediately.
Ketoacidosis
The 2015 FDA report provided a warning to diabetics that the use of Invokana may lead to ketoacidosis. Symptoms of ketoacidosis include:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Difficulty breathing
- Excessive urination
Invokana has also been linked to kidney failure (acute renal failure) and/or heart attacks.
Despite many FDA members expressing doubt about the safety of Invokana, the drug was released in 2013 and has been the common thread in hundreds of complication reports since. A skilled attorney could help injured parties seek justice after experiencing complications from Invokana.
