Recently, Johnson & Johnson announced that DePuy Orthopaedics had appointed a new president, as reported by Bloomberg News. Andrew Ekdahl has been named the new president of DePuy Orthopaedics. Ekdahi has been with the company for twenty years now and was formerly the vice president for Europe, Africa, and the Middle East for DePuy.
David Floyd, previous president of DePuy, resigned in March in order to pursue other interests. This resignation comes in the midst of lawsuits DePuy Orthopaedics is facing from a nationwide recall of hip replacement implants.
Last year, DePuy Orthopaedics recalled the ASR XL Acetabular and ASR Hip Resurfacing systems. Data from the National Joint Registry of England and Wales showed that from a time period of five years, 12 percent of the hip resurfacing system patients needed corrective/revision surgery and 13 percent of the patients with the acetabular system needed corrective/revision surgery.
Patients who
have the recalled hip implant may suffer extreme pain. One of the major concerns with the DePuy recalled hip implant is that it is a metal implant that contains elements of chromium and cobalt. These elements can be extremely hazardous, especially when they have been known to grind off the implant and emerge into the patient’s tissues and muscles. When the metal seeps into the patient’s tissues and muscles, it can cause intense and extreme pain in the patient’s legs, hip, or groin. In some cases, the patient has reported complete immobility.
