Mary and Paul French were very disturbed when they began to notice bruising on Mary’s mother’s wrists. Lois McCallister was a resident at Quadrangle Continuing Care Retirement Community in Delaware County, Pennsylvania.
She suffers from severe dementia and was not able to communicate the cause of her injuries to her son and daughter-in-law. After the family members’ concerns were ignored by facility management, they took matters into their own hands. The Frenchs installed a hidden camera in McCallister’s room, in the hope that they would receive some answers.
The recording revealed Quadrangle staff members mocking and abusing 78-year-old McCallister, including forcing the resident to go topless. The employees are shown poking her in the eyes, shoving her, slapping her ears and refusing to help her put a shirt on.
The hidden camera footage led to the arrest of three Quadrangle employees involved in the abuse. Tyrina Griffin, 21, Samirah Traynham, 22, and Ayesha Muhammad, 19, have all been charged with abuse and assault. The three women pled not guilty to the charges and are expected to face trial this month.
The three employees, the nursing home and the facility’s parent company, Sunrise Senior Living, have been named as defendants in the lawsuit, which was filed this October in Delaware County court. Sunrise Senior Living runs more than 300 care facilities in three countries.
