This month, CooperVision Inc. has expanded their initial contact lense recall in August to include 5 million more contact lenses.

If you have ever purchased contact lenses manufactured by CooperVision Inc, there are several things you NEED to know.

What contact lenses are affected by the recall?

The brands affected by the recall include a number of Avaira Toric and Avaira Sphere contact lenses.

Why were these contact lenses recalled?

CooperVision says that the Avaira contact lenses were recalled because there was a level of residue on certain lenses.  There were reports from consumers who experienced hazy vision and discomfort.  Some of these consumers affected by the recalled contact lenses experienced severe eye pain and/or eye injuries which required medical treatment.

How do you know if your specific contact lenses are affected by this recall?

Visit CooperVision’s website here and you can enter your lot number to see if  your contact lenses are included in the recall.

What are the possible symptoms associated with these recalled contact lenses?

Problems reported by consumers included torn corneas, pain, and hazy vision.

How many of these recalled contact lenses were distributed?

According to MSNBC News, CooperVision produced 6.6 million types of  these recalled contact lenses.

Is the FDA involved?

Yes, the FDA issued a Class One recall.  A class one recall is the most serious type of medical device recall.  This type of classification means there is a reasonable possibility that the use of the recalled product will cause adverse health problems.

What should I do if I have been affected by the recall?

If you experience any symptoms of pain in the eye, discomfort or hazy vision,  remove your contact lenses immediately and contact your eye doctor.
