There has been a recent salmonella outbreak caused by bad papayas. Eight people in the State of Georgia have developed sickness from the papayas. And according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, one person is being hospitalized because of this outbreak.
State Public Health officials have not said where the papayas were purchased and said that they could have been purchased anywhere in the state. Four people in Gwinnett County, Georgia have been affected. Two people have experienced sickness from Cherokee County, Georgia and one person in Fulton County and one person in Dawson County have been affected.
Public health spokeswoman Suleima Salgado said, “We are warning consumers not to eat papayas from Agromod Produce Inc. Consumers who think they may have become ill from eating possibly contaminated papaya should consult their healthcare providers.”
FDA issued a recall last Saturday, July 23, for papayas from Agromod, a Texas based company. There have been reported links of salmonella to papayas in 23 states including California, Massachusetts, Louisiana, Minnesota, and Georgia.
