Cargill, an Arkansas plant, announced this past Wednesday, August 3, it was recalling about 36 pounds of ground-turkey produced in their plant. This recall comes almost five months after the first salmonella illnesses were reported March 9th.
Chris Braden, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) director, said, “Ground turkey has a long shelf life. Contaminated ground turkey may still be in grocery stores or freezers at home. We are urging people to check packaging on any ground turkey in their homes.”
This ground turkey product being recalled was sent to many grocery stores and other locations in 26 states, according to Channel 5, Fox. The ground turkey was sent to many Kroger stores. Currently, the company says they are trying to contact customers who may have purchased it and are trying to have the products removed from store shelves.
The products affected by the recall include: trays of Kroger ground turkey fresh; Shady Brook Farms ground turkey burgers; Honeysuckle white seasoned Italian style ground turkey with natural flavorings; and honeysuckle white ground turkey patties.
Steve Willardsen, the president of Cargill’s turkey-processing business said, “It is regrettable that people may have become ill from eating one of our ground turkey products and, for anyone who did, we are truly sorry.”
There have been 78 reports of salmonella sickness and one of these reported illnesses has resulted in death. The salmonella sicknesses have been associated with an outbreak of salmonella Heidelberg, an antibiotic-resistant form of pathogen.
