In today’s world, drug companies continue to develop new contraceptive devices and birth control pills as the birth control industry continues to thrive.  One birth control device that may be dangerous is the Intrauterine Device (IUD).

The IUD is a device designed to be implanted directly into the uterus and have long-lasting birth control.  The Mirena IUD is shaped a bit bigger than a quarter and is T-shaped.  It is made of flexible plastic.  The device provides birth control for up to five years.  It seems that Bayer, the manufacturer of the Mirena IUD, is not exactly sure how Mirena works.  All the company knows is that the birth control device releases a dose of hormone ievonorgestrel to prevent pregnancy.  It may also inhibit pregnancy by thickening cervical mucus and thinning the uterine lining.

To implant this device, surgery is not required unless there are problems.  A doctor must insert the device and remove the device from the patient.  This type of birth control is 99.7% effective and has the benefit of not having to take a pill every day.  Because of this benefit, the use of IUDs has become widespread.

Unfortunately, the use of IUDs has not always been safe.  The Dalkon Shield was an IUD that had devastating effects on women.  It was created in the 1970s and left patients at risk for infection.  The Dalkon Shield caused 10 women to die and the FDA pulled this IUD off the market. The Dalkon Shield IUD also caused many others to be infertile.

Currently, there have been reports of problems associated Mirena IUDs manufactured by Bayer.  Those problems include:

  • Infection      (which may lead to death)
  • Bleeding
  • Inflammation
  • Infertility
  • Puncture of the uterus
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Permanent pelvic pain
  • Abscesses

There are currently hundreds Mirena IUD lawsuits pending in New Jersey state court and thousands now pending in the Mirena MDL.  Other pending Mirena IUD lawsuits are filed in Ohio and California as well.
