Last week, a restaurant owner in Covington was struck by a car, according to Covnews.com.

A group of juveniles ran from the Mandarin Palace restaurant in the Newton Plaza Shopping Center off of U.S. Highway 278 in Covington, Georgia and then jumped into a car while two restaurant workers were in pursuit of them.  The juveniles were allegedly running away from the restaurant after they failed to pay for a meal.

One worker stepped behind the car and the other stepped in front of the car.  According to Covnews.com, “witnesses told police that the driver backed up and bumped into one of the women, then struck two cars, one in the back and one in the front.  When the driver struck the car in front, the women in front of the car fell.  It was unclear if the driver ran her over or struck her as they fled the scene.”

The lady struck was taken to the Newton Medical Center.  She had surgery for a broken hip and other serious injuries.  Police later discovered the driver of the car was a 17-year-old Melvin Lewis Hight.  Hight was driving on a learner’s permit.  The other people in the car were ages 16, 12, and two 4 year olds.

Currently, Hight was charged with theft of services, leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, serious injury by vehicle, driving without a license, and reckless driving.

He court date(s) and criminal charges are still pending.
